During Your Stay

What to Expect

In Yoga Class

The Sivananda Yoga class at the ashram is a two-hour guided group session. It begins with initial relaxation and pranayama, followed by a sequence of 12 basic postures developed by Swami Vishnudevananda.

An essential feature of the practice is the alternation between postures and periods of relaxation, with emphasis on conscious breathing. The energizing Sun Salutations at the beginning of the class warm and prepare the body for the postures, helping to prevent injury.

Students are encouraged to turn inward and observe sensations in the body with awareness. Teachers offer gentle guidance throughout, reminding students to follow their own rhythm and respect personal limits—never forcing the practice.

Yoga Class

Rooted in an Authentic Yoga Lineage,

The philosophy of this teaching emphasizes self-awareness, gentleness, and a balanced approach to effort and relaxation.

Savasana

Respect Your Body’s Limits

While holding each posture, students are encouraged to breathe, stay focused, and relax. You are always free to rest as needed.

Final relaxation is an essential part of the practice, with 10–15 minutes of guided deep rest at the end of each class.

Please inform your teacher of any injuries or health conditions before class so the practice can be safely adapted to your needs.

Satsang

Meditation, Kirtan, and Teachings

Satsang is a time to uplift the mind in the company of others and find fresh inspiration through meditation, chanting, and listening to teachings from experienced teachers and invited guests. Morning and evening satsang include group meditation, followed by call-and-response kirtan and a talk on the practical philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta. Sheets are provided so you can follow along and participate in the chanting as you feel comfortable.

Kirtan is based on the transformative power of sound vibration and is considered universal, beyond any one tradition. Through heartfelt singing and music, it uplifts the spirit and opens the heart.

Satsang renews inspiration and enthusiasm for practice, supporting a deeper connection to yoga in daily life.

5 Points of Yoga

Swami Vishnudevananda summarizes the five points of yoga and their power to transform our lives:

Yoga is a life of self discipline built upon the tenets of simple living and high thinking. If you follow these five points, which compose a true holistic approach to our whole system of body, mind and soul, you will gain strength and balance in this demanding, stressful world.

Obstacles become stepping stones to success, and life is a school for the development of character and compassion.
