What to Expect in the Yoga Class

The Sivananda Yoga class at the ashram is a 2-hour group session with a teacher.  The class starts with initial relaxation and pranayama followed by a series of 12 basic postures which was designed by Swami Vishnudevananda.

An important feature is that the postures alternate with periods of relaxation, with an accent on breathing.  The energizing sun salutations series done at the the beginning of the sequence warms up and prepares the body for the postures and helps to avoid injury.

Students are encouraged to focus inwards, and to notice carefully sensations in the body.  The teachers will periodically remind the class to follow the rhythm and to observe personal limitations, never forcing the practice.

The general philosophy of this system of teaching is promoting self awareness, gentleness, and balance between effort and relaxation.

Students can rest as needed as it is important to respect the body limitations.  When holding a posture students are encouraged to breathe, focus, and relax.  The final relaxation is an essential part of the practice, when students spend 15-20 minutes in guided, deep relaxation.

Please be sure to communicate any information on injuries or health conditions to our yoga teachers prior to the beginning of class so that we can adjust and adapt the practice for you.

Satsang

Meditation, Kirtan, and Lecture

The purpose of satsang is to uplift one’s mind in the company of others and find fresh inspiration by listening to teachers, special guests, and studying Yoga scriptures. Our morning and evening “satsang” practice consists of  group meditation followed by call and response “kirtan” chanting and a talk on the practical philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta. Sheets are provided to help you to follow along and participate in chanting as you wish. The practice of kirtan chanting is based on the healing power of sound vibration and is considered to be universal, not sectarian. The heartfelt singing, along with music uplifts the spirit and opens the heart.

Satsang can renew inspiration and enthusiasm for yoga practice to enhance one’s life.

Following Yoga tradition, meals are vegetarian, including a limited amount of dairy items. Eating a plant-based diet has been conclusively shown to be good for health and well-being, it is detoxifying and nutritious at the same time.

A small breakfast snack, usually rice soup, is served at 7:30am. Main meals are offered at 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, with a small fruit snack served in the afternoon.  Additional snacks are available in the boutique if needed.

Guests enjoying Yoga Life

Amazing Views

The Yoga resort is situated high up on a hillside, so that a walk around the property gives some wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, with the center of Dalat city on the distance. One of the most popular activities for our guests is an early morning walk to a look-out area on the hillside to watch the sunrise.

Bird Watching

The Dalat Plateau is internationally known as an important area for bird watching, with many species that can be seen in this area alone. Within the Dalat region the Tuyen Lam Lake area where the Yoga resort is situated is specially well known as a site of interest for “birding”. The Resort has areas of both pine forest and mixed, broadleaf forest that are home to many different species.

Untouched Forest

The Yoga Resort is situated in the midst of pine forest that is a typical part of the Dalat area landscape. The Resort also has areas of original, untouched “broadleaf” forest with many different varieties of trees and plants, and within a short walk has access to large areas of mountainside forest that is home to many different varieties of birds and animals. A guided walk in the forest is a highlight of their visit for many of our guests.

Walking Meditation Labyrinth

The Labyrinth offers a twenty-minute meditative walk. Together with awareness, take a breath, ask a question, step inside and walk the labyrinth to find your answer. Unlike a maze, there is only one way in and one way out.  The labyrinth is a purposeful path of twists and turns, a metaphor for life.  Walking the labyrinth can be a meditation practice and a walking prayer.

Tuyen Lam Lake

Tuyền Lâm Lake is a man-made lake in Đà Lạt city, in Lâm Đồng Province, Vietnam. It is one of 21 National Tourism Areas. Trúc Lâm Temple can be reached by cable car.  At the Yoga Resort we have a beautiful view of the lake from the walk up to the scenic lookout.

Bonfire Meditation

When possible we like to have an outdoor bonfire meditation session where we sit and meditate and sing kirtan together.  The fire is a symbol of transformation and helps us to remember that everything in life is changing and not to be attached to any one idea.

Sivananda Yoga Resort Boutique

The Yoga Resort boutique is open daily, offering a selection of books, CDs, clothing, yoga mats, meditation cushions, shawls, mala beads, other yoga related items, gifts and pictures. Some food supplements, notebooks and toiletries are also available. We also offer snacks and drinks.
